Bruxism (Teeth Clenching and Grinding)

Bruxism involves teeth clenching, grinding or repetitive jaw-muscle activity during sleep or while awake.

Bruxism is jaw-muscle activity associated with clenching and grinding that can occur while awake or asleep. The person may be unaware of it. Mild cases may not cause significant problems; more intense or prolonged activity can cause tooth wear, restoration damage, jaw fatigue or muscle pain.

Assessment considers symptom timing, dental findings, medicines and sleep characteristics. Stress, habits and other factors may contribute; bruxism is not explained by stress alone. Jaw pain may have other causes, so all symptoms should not automatically be attributed to clenching.

Treatment aims to protect teeth and restorations, assess discomfort and manage contributing factors. A custom appliance may be used in suitable cases. Recognising daytime clenching and adjusting habits may also be part of the plan. Relevant medical assessment for sleep or other health problems is arranged where necessary.

Using an appliance or another intervention does not always eliminate the cause of bruxism completely. Tooth wear and muscle symptoms need monitoring. Irreversible dental procedures are not automatically planned simply because clenching is present; the need for each procedure is assessed separately.

Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin is a medicine that can temporarily reduce muscle activity. It has been studied in relation to clenching and associated muscle symptoms. However, it cannot be described as a method that completely eliminates bruxism or definitively treats its cause in everyone. Studies vary in scope and findings, and uncertainties remain about long-term effects.

When considering an application, the diagnosis, symptom causes and protective approaches are assessed first. It does not automatically replace night guards, habit modification or management of associated conditions. It should not be considered appropriate for every complaint of jaw pain or clenching.

Adverse effects may include muscle weakness, difficulty chewing or changes in facial movements. A decision must consider individual health, alternatives and the medicine's conditions of use. An online explanation does not replace an individual suitability decision or a recommendation for medicine administration.

Night Guard

A night guard is a custom-made appliance placed over the teeth in suitable cases. Its main purpose is to help reduce the effects of clenching and grinding on teeth or restorations. Its type, thickness and contact arrangement are determined individually.

After impressions are taken, the appliance is made and checked in the mouth. Its fit, contacts with the opposing teeth and any discomfort during use are assessed. A randomly selected product or one with an unchecked fit does not replace individual planning.

A night guard does not definitely stop clenching. Symptoms, appliance wear and the bite are monitored during use. Cleaning and wearing instructions are explained. Changes in fit, increased pain or altered chewing require reassessment.
