An oral appliance for snoring aims to support airway patency by adjusting the position of the lower jaw during sleep in suitable individuals. It is not planned without assessing the cause of snoring, because snoring may be limited to sound or may indicate obstructive sleep apnoea.
Pauses in breathing during sleep, waking with a choking sensation or marked daytime sleepiness require medical sleep assessment. Sleep apnoea diagnosis and treatment selection are made by the relevant physician. Oral appliances are options for selected individuals, and do not replace other treatments for every case of sleep apnoea.
Planning assesses tooth and gum health, existing prostheses and the jaw joint. The custom appliance's fit is checked and necessary adjustments made. Reduced snoring alone may not sufficiently demonstrate effectiveness; sleep testing may be needed.
Use may cause changes in saliva, tooth sensitivity, jaw discomfort or bite changes over time. Dental reviews and medical follow-up are therefore coordinated. The appliance cannot be guaranteed to stop snoring completely or definitively resolve sleep apnoea in everyone.
