Digital Dentistry and Digital Smile Design (DSD)

DIGITAL DENTISTRY AND DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN (DSD)

Digital smile design, on the contrary to common belief, is not just one software or a computer program. Digital smile design can be defined as utilizing latest technologies and developments in dentistry for the purpose of creating a completely new smile design.

1. DSD IS THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN DENTISTRY

DSD is the most recent development in dentistry which provides people with a lost or never had smile. DSD became widely available by the year 2015 with the success of latest digital analysis epuipments in perfectly scanning the whole intraoral area.

2. DSD IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER ANALOG MEASURING METHODS

DSD is a protocol which requires specially trained dentists and technicians who are capable of operating digital equipment. From the beginning of teeth preparation to the end, DSD is an entirely different procedure  compared to conventional impression methods.

3. DSD IS QUICKER AND SUPERIOR COMPARED TO ANALOG METHODS

DSD provides impecable scanning and teeth positioning inside the oral cavity, which can not be done as well with conventional methods. Fully adaptable crowns and possibility of pre-procedure design adjustments  enables successful aesthetics with single procedure. As a result, you do not have to go through weeks of try-in sessions, seen with conventional methods. DSD procedure is fully completed 3 to 5 days after the preparation of teeth.

4. DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN ELIMINATES POSSIBILITY OF HUMAN ERROR

Design is completely done on computer software. It is quick. Teeth shapes and morphologies available on data bank are chosen according to the facial aesthetic parameters and expectations of the patient. Symmetry is achieved by flawless digital teeth positioning according to the digital impression which is not possible merely by human hand. Teeth are milled out of a solid block and are exact copies of what is designed on computer software. This eliminates the errors seen with conventional cast models and various possible defects in modelling process depending on that particular technician.

DSD PROCUDURE WORKFLOW IS AS FOLLOWS

1. Digital pictures of face and perioral area are taken before any procedure on teeth. Intraoral scanning is done by advanced scanning devices.

2. These pictures and impressions are analyzed by special computer programs specific to DSD procedure. Desired teeth positions and shape is determined and teeth are designed.

3. Preliminary design is milled by a 3D printer.

4. Obtained design (mock up) is transferred to oral cavity with transparent splints. After required adjustments, teeth positions and shape are checked again.

5. Before any preparation is done on the patient’s teeth, dentist and patient are able to observe the final shapes and positions of teeth intraorally thanks to mock up procedure. After the patient’s approval of satisfaction, this design is transferred to computer. Teeth are at this point, prepared for final treatment and intraoral scannings are done again for the second time. 2 scans that are obtained are superimposed on computer software and final design is achieved according to that. 3D printer mills out the laminates or crowns.

6. Entire procedure is completed in less than 1 week without the need of step by step try-ins.

DSD protocol leaves nothing to chance. Not only the morphology of teeth, but also the position inside the mouth and proportions are also perfectly corrected. Thanks to this, the smile is designed and changed anew.
